Christmas in China

What a crock!!!!! I have given up on the voice software as it keeps crashing my computer operating system, so

back to the hunt and peck system. Maybe in a few years the technology will catch up with my needs. In the mean

time I sit here listening to CKNW from Vancouver ( streaming over the Net) on this overcast Saturday morning

forcing myself to do on a weekly basis what I should be doing a lot more often. China being a politically driven

country that officially recognizes no religions is gearing up for Christmas in a big way. You see Xmas lights,

decorations and even trees for sale here in Nanjing. The city is actually starting to look like Xmas. The catch is

that we don’t have an official holiday here for Xmas but the school has graciously given us a couple of days off to

celebrate although we will have to make them up later! LOL

Loving the hot water here! Here’s a little diddy about the hot water in our apartment. There is no such thing as a

hot water tank in China. There is instead an in line gas heater tat preheats the water on demand. The problem is

that the water never gets really hot so no such thing as a steamy shower. However in theory you never run out of

hot water. The striker for the gas is automatic (runs from two C batteries). A few days ago for no apparent reason

the gas would not ignite and not speaking Chinese it was quite the project to get the repairman here. We checked

it and the striker was sending out little sparks but no gas. Finally after 2 days with ice cold showers (never want to

go through that again) a repairman arrived. He pushed a button inside the machine and there it went. Just like

having a problem with your car until you take it to the garage where it works fine. Anyway we learned the hard way

I might add that if the battery is low it will still spark, but not strong enough to light the gas. Live and learn! Well

anyway now its time for Greg and I to start planning for Xmas. We have argued over the time we will put the tree

up. Greg says Christmas Eve and I say the 15th. Oh well it doesn't matter as long as we get it up.........LOL
